Requirements

We welcome anyone who cares about minority groups, would like to offer service for people, feel strongly about the injustices of society, and is willing to promote social fairness and justice to join our department.

Teaching goals and features of undergraduate program

• The primary goal is to train students who will become social work practioners and subsequently leaders in a variety of social work related fields.
• A large variety of social work courses are offered in order to give our students diversity and flexibility in the classes they choose. We stress practicum in our courses, and stay in line with social work legislation. We offer classes to equip our students with the legal and practical knowledge they will need to pursue a career in social work and related fields.
• We emphasize the importance of students nurturing their own self awareness and knowing themselves better, and we stress that noble thoughts towards social work services is just as important as professional abilities and skills.

Introduction of undergraduate courses

Our compulsory courses are Introduction to Social Work, Social Case Work, Social Group Work, Social Work Research Methods, Social Policy and Social Legislation, and many others.

A range of different elective courses are offered each year:

• Freshman courses—Self-exploration and Development, Volunteer Services, Gender Relations and Society, Family Institution and Modern Society, Logic, Social Problems and Social Work, Introduction to Social Science…etc.
• Sophomore courses—Psychiatry, Human Biology, Introduction to Social Welfare, Psychiatric Social Work, Social Welfare Organization…etc.
• Junior courses—Children and Social Work, Teenagers and Social Work, Women and Social Work, The Elderly and Social Work, Social Work with Disabled People, Program Planning and Evaluation, Family and Social Work, Industry of Social Work, School Social Services, Medical Social Work, Social Work in Juvenile and Criminal Justice Settings…etc.
• Senior courses—Introduction to Healing through Art, Mental Health, Social Work and Marketing Strategies, Drug Abuse, Physiological Psychology, The Credit Union Movement and Community Development, Social Work Finance Management, Seminar on Social Welfare, Professional Internships, Introduction to Play Therapy…etc.

Proficiency Programs

In order to provide students with an alternative to basic social work, we offer a concentration entitled “Children, Marriage, Family and Social Work concentration” to those interested in cultivating professional knowledge of children, marriage, and families.

Enrollment

There are three ways to apply for enrollment in our department: high school recommendation, individual application, and university entrance examination. We will consider students recommended by their high schools if they served in a student club for at least a semester and graduated as the top 40% of their graduating class (aboriginal and residents of offshore islands are exempt from academic requirements). Selection criteria include a social attitude test, interview, autobiography and club participation report

Our master’s program is comprised of both full time students and on-the-job students. Every year we have many applicants participate in our entrance exam, including graduating BSW students and experienced social workers. This creates our master’s program with students of diverse backgrounds.

This diversity allows students to learn from one another, share various perspectives, and make their respective learning experience more rewarding.

Our courses are designed to convey social work theories and practice as well as to prepare our students to be able to do social work research. Our courses also emphasize the importance of communication and evaluation. In order to foster individuals dedicated to research and education and management of social work in Taiwan, our doctorate program focuses both on theory and on practice. Our courses include emphasis on social work research methods, social work theory, social policy analysis, and service delivery which helps strengthen to ability to conduct research, examine social problems and understand organizational policies and structure. Training our doctorate students to develop new theories and skills to offer new opinions and analysis to Taiwan’s social problems are major goals of our department. Through this training, we also hope to provide individuals who will become outstanding educators in Taiwan’s field of social work.

We offer advance training programs for present directors of social organizations and social workers. Individuals who complete these courses can use those credits towards our master’s degree program, and some courses can be used as qualifications for our master’s program entrance exam. Every semester, we also offer courses for Taiwanese citizens interested in social work related subjects who pass certain requirements. Courses in this program balance practicum and research assessment. We welcome anyone who is interested to join our master degree credit program.
